
Kodiak,
Alaska
Organized
October 7, 1982, Natalia Shelikof Chapter derives its name from the courageous wife
and partner of Grigor Ivonovitch Shelikof, founder of the Russian Colonies in
America. Together the Shelikofs established the first permanent settlement at
Three Saints Bay, Kodiak Island in 1784 while pursuing the fur trade.
Natalia
Shelikof was influential in establishing schools, developing agriculture, and bringing
the Russian Orthodox Church to Alaska.
Several
geographic names commemorate this capable visionary woman in Alaska.
