|
Q. Why do I always get
disconnected? Return To TOP
|
|
A. Here is a rundown of the
most common solutions for unwanted disconnects. Disable call waiting
You probably know this already, but you should disable call waiting. The
"click" of an incoming call may disconnect you, though newer
modems have improved error control correction that is less sensitive to
this.
In most areas, you can disable call waiting by placing *70, in front of
the dial-up phone number, like so: *70,555-555
Try unplugging any devices from the back of the modem
Modems have two phone jacks on the back: one is for the line connected to
the wall jack. The other is for plugging in a telephone, answering
machine, fax machine, etc.
Try unplugging your telephone or any other device attached to the back of
the modem. Some devices may cause problems. For instance, some telephones
draw power from the phone line every few minutes to power the circuits
that keep track of speed dial number and etc.
Check your computer settings
Make sure that your settings in your computer are not set to disconnect
after so many minutes of idle time. To check these go into your modem
properties.
Update Your modem drivers
Try lowering your port speeds
Try lowering your port speeds to 38400 or even 19200. If the dropped
connections cease, a slow UART may be the problem. A replacement serial
port card should fix the problem.

password are in lower case, unless you know that they have a capital
letter in them, The user name usually doesn't, but some of the first
customers had at least two capital letters in there passwords.
Try retyping you user name and password, but when you do make sure that the
"CAPS LOCK" hasn't been activated accidentally.

Q. Can I receive viruses through my South Central account?
|
|
A. Most new viruses are spread through email attachments. Be
very cautious about opening email messages that have
attachments, even if you know the person who sent it. The best
rule is: never open anything unless you know what it is, who sent it,
and why it was sent. Invest in good virus detection software, such
as Norton or Mcafee, and update the virus definitions regularly. It
can save you a lot of time and frustration.
|
Q. Why do I receive so much junk email? Does South Central sell
my email address?
|
|
A. South Central respects the privacy of our customers and does
not sell or give out email addresses. Junk Email, or spam, is
defined as unsolicited, unwanted email. Spammers continually
comb the web looking for new email addresses to add to their lists.
The best protection is to be very careful who you give your email
address out to. Be careful to read and understand the privacy
policies of companies and web sites that you visit, before giving
your email address out. Many people also enjoy forwarding jokes
and other messages to each other, this is one of the major ways
spammers collect addresses. As these forwarded messages make
their way around the internet, they collect many addresses. All a
spammer has to do is receive one, and then they have an instant
list of email addresses to add to their own spam lists.
Tips to Prevent spam email:
- Never give out your South Central Email address, unless you
are sure that it will not be sold or given to a spammer.
- Avoid sending forwarded jokes and chain letters, or always use
the bcc: line when sending them (This hides the addresses of
recipients from each other. Long lists of email addresses are
avoided when using bcc:)
- Sign up for a free email account from one of the various
providers on the Internet and give it out instead of your South
Central address. That way, spam goes to your free account,
leaving your South Central account uncluttered.
